Ash to ashes? All you need to know about Ash Dieback

Also known as ‘Chalara’ ash dieback, is a disease of ash trees (Fraxinus sp.) caused by a fungus called Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. The first dying ash trees were reported in Poland in the 1990s and ash dieback has since spread all across Europe, including our leafy shores.

Signs and Symptoms include:

  • Dark brown orange lesions on the leaves
  • Discolouration of leaf stems
  • Patches of brown dying leaves,(don’t confuse with ash ‘keys’ which are just the seeds of the tree)
  • ‘Diamond-shaped’ lesions on the bark
  • Crown Dieback
  • Weakens tree’s immune system
  • Increased risk of other pests and pathogens like honey fungus

What to do if you suspect Ash Dieback

Call Furlonger Tree Services. Our qualified arborists will be able to diagnose the disease and suggest suitable treatment. Currently, the best thing to do is to remove the tree to prevent the spread of the disease, although there is some promising research that a natural soil treatment could help trees resist ash dieback.

NEW SERVICE – Spider Lift and Operator Hire now available!

We’re delighted to be able to offer our  in-house ‘cherry-picker’ to our customers. In the past we’ve had to hire the equipment, but we’ve finally got our own and it makes many difficult jobs much easier!

Due to Work At Height regulations, we do seek to use the MEWP (Mobile Elevated Working Platform) wherever possible, and all our operatives are fully qualified and highly experienced.

See info on our website: https://www.furlongertreeservices.co.uk/cherry-picker-hire/

COMMUNITY – £1,000 Giveaway Winner

At Furlonger Tree Services we love that we’re able to run competitions in the local area for people that need our help. We recently completed a garden makeover for Shirley Stevenson who was nominated by her granddaughter as she is unable to maintain the garden herself. We spruced up the garden with £1000 worth of man hours, and look forward to returning in the spring for an additional trim!

Furlonger Tree Services to the Rescue!

During the winter a tree fell on to a telephone line at Mid-Surrey Mencap, the charity we have been supporting for the past couple of years. They gave us a call and we shifted our schedule to get out to them as soon as possible.

‘Hung up’ trees can be dangerous, so it was the perfect job for our new Spider Lift, enabling the operative to work safely on the tree without risk of it collapsing. Wet and windy weather are a bad combination for trees, with the water loosening their grip in the ground and the wind pushing them over.

There were two other dangerously leaning trees, so we erred on the side of caution and removed them as well.  We did the job without charge, left the site clean and tidy as always, ready for Mencap to continue their great work.

Review

“Thank you all so very much for everything that you do to help us…

Please be assured we never under estimate the value of your work, both in terms of the cost you have saved our charity and for the fact that your business is not earning whilst you are giving to us.  We are very grateful.

2018/19 was a scary year for us as we nearly lost our charity but thanks to people such as yourself we managed to pull through and 2020 is looking much brighter.”
